Living on the streets in a city can feel hopeless, but there are clear steps you can take to get safer, find shelter, and start rebuilding. At Holy Family Catholic Church in Patchway we see many faced with this challenge, and we’ve gathered the most useful advice right here.
First, find a place that’s warm and legal to stay for the night. Local shelters in Bristol and nearby towns usually open at 6 pm, and they often have a limit of 30 days. Call the city’s 24‑hour hotline (0117 555 1234) to get the nearest address.
Second, keep your important papers together – ID, medical cards, and any benefit letters. Store them in a waterproof pouch inside a sturdy backpack. This makes it easier to prove who you are when you apply for housing assistance.
Third, protect your health. Carry a basic hygiene kit: toothbrush, soap, a reusable water bottle, and a pair of fresh socks. Small actions like washing your hands can stop infections that would otherwise keep you stuck in a cycle of illness.
Holy Family runs a weekly soup kitchen every Thursday at 7 pm. Volunteers serve hot meals and talk with guests about local services. If you need a warm meal, just walk in – no appointment needed.
We also partner with the city’s housing office to offer one‑on‑one advice sessions on Mondays. A trained volunteer helps you fill out forms for emergency housing, disability benefits, and job training programs.
Want to give back? You don’t need a lot of time. Bring a few extra blankets, a pair of shoes, or a prepaid phone card to the kitchen. Even a single conversation can lift someone’s spirits and let them know they’re not invisible.
If you have more time, sign up for our outreach team. The team visits nearby streets, parks, and train stations, handing out care packages and sharing information about shelters and health clinics. Training is a short evening workshop – we’ll teach you how to talk respectfully, keep yourself safe, and hand out resources effectively.
Faith plays a big part in our work. We hold a quiet prayer service every Saturday morning for those struggling with homelessness. You’re welcome to join, or simply sit in the garden and enjoy a few minutes of calm.
Remember, small actions add up. Checking in with a neighbour, leaving a spare coat on a bench, or donating a few pounds to our charity box can change a life. The biggest impact comes when we all pitch in, whether you’re volunteering, donating, or just spreading the word.
If you’re facing homelessness right now, call the hotline, head to the soup kitchen, or walk into the church office. Our doors are open, and we’ll help you find a safe place to stay and the steps toward a stable future.
